Algiers Development District

Dedicated to serving the Algiers community for nearly 30 years.
The Algiers Development District was created in 1992 as a community entity for Algiers. In 2003, the district became a special taxing district created by state legislation. The District has been designated as a local redevelopment authority for Federal City military base realignment purposes and has been authorized to incur debt.
Through the years, ADD has created and aided numerous initiatives to promote economic development and create jobs and investment opportunities within Algiers in the overall interests of its residents and business owners.

Our Work

New Orleans Riverside at Federal City

New Orleans Riverside at Federal City is one of the largest economic development initiatives in the state of Louisiana. Federal City is a public-private mixed-use development located on the former Naval Support Activity (NSA) military base in Algiers. On the West Bank of the Mississippi River, Federal City is home to the Marine Force Reserves, the United States Coast Guard Sector Command, the New Orleans Maritime Military Academy and much more.

Bike and Hike Path

In November 2012, ADD broke ground to develop and maintain a recreational path along the Algiers levee. The Bike and Hike Path has become a popular leisure and tourist destination affording spectacular views of the city’s East Bank.

Divided into phases, the first two phases were funded by ADD and run from the Algiers Ferry landing through Federal City. Phase III recently extended the path with blacktop by the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority – West to the Chalmette Ferry. Lights and benches are awaiting installation in this area due to pending work by the Army Corps of Engineers to raise parts of the levee.

Once completed, the Bike and Hike Path will connect a five-parish area with planned amenities to include neighborhood access ramps, benches, light fixtures, drinking fountains, trash receptacles and doggie waste bag stations.

Road Works

ADD is authorized to invest money in transportation projects which benefit the Algiers community.

Completed Projects Include:

Built and installed “Welcome to Algiers” signs in five (5) of the major entrances to the community with landscaping to establish a sense of community and pride for Algiers residents.

Lighting the Intra-coastal Bridge, a collaboration led by ADD with the State of Louisiana, City of New Orleans, and the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission, was completed in and has improved safety for traffic to and from the lower coast of Algiers.

Road extensions of Opelousas Avenue and Patterson Road into Federal City.

Public Safety

Public safety is always a priority. As such, LED lighting has been installed throughout Federal City, and solar lights have been installed along the Bike Hike Path between the Algiers Ferry Terminal and Federal City. Security cameras have also been installed at all entrances and exits throughout the property.
